Pre Draft Preparation
Before the official draft ceremony takes place, several key stages are completed. Here’s a breakdown of each phase:
Local Player List Announcement
First, the local players list is announced for those who have not yet played in the PSL but are going to make their debut in the upcoming season.
Player Categorization
The Chief Selector assigns categories to all local players based on their talent and performance level. New or developing players are usually placed in categories such as Silver or Emerging.
Foreign Player Registration
Next comes the registration of international players. These players are generally placed in higher categories such as Gold, Diamond, or Platinum, depending on their experience and global performance.
Pick Order Announcement
Through an automated process, the pick order is determined specifying which franchise will make the first selection and how many picks each team will have in each category.
Retention Program
Under the Retention Program, each franchise is allowed to retain up to eight players from the previous season who were already part of their squad.
Draft Announcement
Finally, the most awaited moment arrives; the PSL Draft Announcement. Each franchise enters the draft with its eight retained players and begins selecting the remaining players under the categories defined by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Every team is allowed to select a total of 20 players for their squad.
These players are chosen from five different categories assigned by PCB, which help determine their draft value and salary range.
PSL 11 Draft Breakdown
As we know, in the PSL Draft, each franchise is allowed to retain up to eight players from the previous season and can pick a maximum of 18 additional players during the draft.
All drafted players are divided into five categories: Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver, Emerging, and Supplementary.
In the Supplementary Category, teams can pick no more than two players, while in the Emerging Category, every team must select at least two players, which is a mandatory requirement for all franchises.
Rules for Foreign Players
Each team is allowed to select a maximum of six foreign players and must include a minimum of five foreign players in their squad.
According to PSL regulations, every team can feature three or a maximum of four foreign players in their playing XI during any match.
Rules For Emerging Category
The Emerging Category in the Pakistan Super League is designed to promote young and talented players from the domestic circuit. Below are the official eligibility criteria for this category:
- The player must be part of Pakistan’s domestic cricket circuit.
- The player’s age must be under 23 years before the draft date.
- Any player who has already represented the Pakistan National Team is not eligible for the Emerging Category.
- Each franchise is allowed to nominate up to three players for consideration in the Emerging Category.
PSL Category Downgrade Rules in 2026
Any team is eligible to downgrade a player’s category. This can be due to their strategic plan or possibly because of budget reasons.
For this, any team can appoint a retained player as a brand ambassador, and their salary will be paid directly from the draft budget.
Now, the appointed retained player will be paid separately, but the draft budget will not be impacted.
If the player agrees to the category downgrade, the franchise sends a formal relegation request to the PCB. The PCB then informs all other franchises about this request, and if all other franchises also agree to the downgrade of that player, then the request is accepted.
Conclusion
These were the rules and regulations related to the Pakistan Super League draft so far, which every franchise is bound to follow and act upon. Furthermore, if any new addition or feature is introduced in the rules for PSL 2026 edition, that is, PSL 11, we will share it with you in this article.
